Interpretation
When I was little I secretly thought Love Story was standing up for everyone who'd ever crushed in secret. Romeo and Juliet were a dead end; she refuses the script — why must young love be tragedy? So she picks up the pen and gives Juliet a window that opens.
Hearing it now, it's like sixteen-year-old defiance arguing with the whole world: I don't care what you say is impossible, my love gets an ending. That righteous, silly stubbornness is exactly what moves you. It became a national love song for a reason — who doesn't carry a version of themselves that insists on a happy ending.
