Fifteen

I can't listen to Fifteen lightly — it feels written to one specific person. Taylor looks back at fifteen-year-old her, not with "don't be sad" but a soft "you'll realize the boy who made you cry all night, you'll barely remember his name."

I've always read it as her earliest "gentle adult" side. She doesn't write youth as tragedy or fairy tale, just tells it straight: some lessons you only take by heartbreak. Every time I hear "I remember all the things I thought I wanted," I'm back at fifteen, so sure of things that all turned out wrong.
