Interpretation

The re-recording of Dear John makes me a little nervous, because it's too true. Thirteen years older, the voice is lower; that letter about 'you were much older, you pulled me into something uneven' lands calmer and more unanswerable than before.

Hearing it I think: only someone hurt young can write like this once grown. It isn't revenge, it's squaring the account. When she sings 'don't you think nineteen's too young,' behind the number is a girl finally done making excuses for anyone.

This is an interpretation based on publicly available material. Not official commentary.
