Interpretation
This is the "August" girl's monologue in a triangle: she knows she's the summer secret, out by fall. Haven't you been someone's "temporary," all-in, never written into the ending?
It writes the "unchosen tenderness" burning yet restrained. Taylor uses August's heat for a resigned longing: I'm not in your future, but that summer was real.
